Expunge Colorado is dedicated to providing education, training, consultation and access to legal services for record sealing of eligible criminal cases in Colorado. Since 2018, the founders of Expunge Colorado have provided and hosted a free, annual record sealing event serving all Coloradans.
Having a criminal record has devastating, lifelong consequences that can affect families for multiple generations. Colorado law permits many charges to be removed yet few individuals experience the relief of a sealed record due to the complicated and costly process. Expunge Colorado exists to alleviate the legal and financial burdens put on individuals who want and deserve a fresh start. Record sealing can help restore access to housing, employment, education, public assistance, and voting rights.
Expunge Colorado is a women/BIPOC-led, 501c3 Colorado non-profit dedicated to serving justice impacted people and their communities by providing education, training, consultation and access to pro bono legal services for record sealing of eligible criminal cases in Colorado.
In 2018, Rosalie Flores brought the first National Expungement Week (N.E.W.) record sealing clinic to Denver, Colorado.
From 2018-2020, Rosalie, Abbey, and Melanie volunteered with N.E.W. to provide free legal record sealing services to Denver. The 2019 record sealing clinic brought joy and success in helping 40 Coloradans seal their criminal records. Witnessing the impact this had on others and the three organizers, it sparked the idea of creating a statewide nonprofit that could focus on providing ongoing legal services and education on record sealing in Colorado. Criminal defense attorney, Abbey Moffitt, leads the team in understanding Colorado's record sealing laws and trains other lawyers.
The record sealing work of Expunge Colorado goes beyond just cannabis charges. The national impact of the Black Lives Matter movement has brought more light to the injustices that face black and brown communities and low-income marginalized communities. Expunge Colorado continues to provide a sustainable, ongoing solution for record sealing efforts throughout the state.

Legal Counsel Criminal Justice Lawyer, A. Moffitt Law
After graduating from law school from the University of Iowa, Abbey Moffitt Hruby moved to Colorado and began working as a public defender in Jefferson County. There, she witnessed the perpetual power of the justice system to never let go of those within its grasp, seen through probationary and pre-trial supervision, prosecutorial pressure to plead guilty, and the use of criminal histories to define a person’s value rather than their own story. After working in private practice for several years, Abbey started her own law practice, A. Moffitt Law, in 2019. She specializes in representing clients in misdemeanor and felony drug cases throughout Colorado. She volunteered as the lead criminal defense attorney for National Expungement Week in 2018 and 2019 and continues to serve as legal counsel and volunteer for Expunge Colorado.

In 2018, we helped seal 8 criminal records for 4 clients during our first ever, one-day clinic during National Expungement Week in Denver.
In 2019, that number quadrupled to successfully sealing 31 criminal records in counties across Colorado, including Arapahoe, Denver, Jefferson, Summit, Larimer, Broomfield and Adams. Changes to existing Colorado law in 2019 allowed for increased eligibility of sealable offenses, and this change and impact fueled passion within the organization to continue this needed work. Later this year, Governor Polis issued a proclamation recognizing National Expungement Week between September 21, 2019 and September 28, 2019 highlighting the importance of our sealing work in Colorado.
In 2020, Expunge Colorado sent out a letter to select elected officials and continues to work on calling for the automatic sealing of dismissed arrest cases incurred during the unconstitutional curfew declaration issued by Mayor Hancock during the BLM protests.
The our latest results, please see our 2022-2023 Annual Impact Report, linked above. Since 2018, we've reviewed over 500 records and have successfully sealed over 140+ cases.
