Expunge Colorado is an active member of the Colorado Clean Slate Coalition instrumental in passing Colorado’s Clean Slate Act (SB22-99) in 2022. The law put in place a new system to automate record sealing for certain low level criminal convictions beginning in July 2024. This is currently underway and in-progress. 100K records have been identified for sealing through the new automated process, cases are still being sealed and it is an ongoing process.
in the 2024 Legislative session, we also helped pass a bill (HB24-1133) that creates an automated process for certain non-convictions; allows for virtual hearings; and cleans up technical fixes within the Clean Slate Law; however these updates will be implemented in July 2025.
With over 1.3 Million Coloradans that have a criminal record eligible to be sealed, the need for Expunge Colorado’s pro bono legal services through the petition-based process are still in need and in high demand. The petition-based process is the original pathway to record sealing. The waiting period for the petition-based process is substantially less than that for the automated process. Expunge Colorado uses the petition-based process and to date we’ve sealed 200+ cases pro bono.
Below are a few helpful links that are focused on the new automated process within the CO Clean Slate Law:
We understand that not everyone will be able to be eligible through CO’s Clean Slate Law as it stands today. With collective feedback, we can continue to push for changes and keep advocating at the state level through the CO Clean Slate Coalition.
